Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these treatments should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something activating and you become ravenous," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
